Biography
Oscar Soto-Mitchell was born in Brazil in 1982 and raised in Spartanburg, South Carolina. His father is Chilean and his mother Chilean-born American. Though his parents instructed him in English, they spoke to each other in Spanish and Portuguese, languages he did not understand. The mysterious words he heard were like waves of energy that formed the music of his youth, not always understood, but full of history and life. His paintings are infused with written words that may not always be understood literally by the viewer, but the music remains. After living abroad for more than eight years, including over four years in Chile, Soto-Mitchell returned to South Carolina in August of 2017 to pursue his MFA at Winthrop University and to teach art at St. Anne Catholic School in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
Creative Interpretation
Leaving the world that you know in search of a better life takes courage, especially when the fate of your family is in your hands. My painting is inspired by the five-year-old daughter of Margarita, who at such a young age assured her mother that she wouldn’t have any trouble with her English, “Yo puedo con el inglés.” The simple confidence of a child can be contagious and fill an entire family with hope. The writing in this painting repeats, “yo puedo” (I can do it) like a mantra that radiates from the anonymous child and activates everything around her in color, rhythm, and light. The attitudes we embody exude from us across languages and borders. Positivity is power.

Oscar Soto-Mitchell nació en 1982 en Brasilia, Brasil y creció en Spartanburg, Carolina del Sur. Su padre es chileno y su madre nació y creció en Chile con sus padres estadounidenses. Cuando era niño le enseñaron solamente inglés, pero sus padres hablaban entre ellos en español y portugués, por lo cual vivió rodeado de lenguajes que no entendía. Esas misteriosas palabras fueron como oleadas de energía que formaron la música de su juventud, no siempre entendida, pero llena de historia y vida. Sus pinturas están llenas de palabras escritas que el espectador no siempre comprende, pero la música permanece. Después de vivir en el extranjero por más de ocho años, incluyendo más de cuatro años en Chile, Soto-Mitchell regresó a Carolina del Sur en agosto de 2017 con la finalidad de estudiar arte en Winthrop University y trabajar como profesor de arte en la escuela St. Anne Catholic School en Rock Hill, Carolina del Sur.
Interpretación creativa
Dejar el mundo que se conoce en busca de una vida mejor requiere coraje, especialmente cuando el destino de tu familia está en tus manos. Mi pintura está inspirada en la hija de cinco años de Margarita quien a esa edad tan temprana le aseguró a su madre que no tendría ningún problema con el idioma inglés, “Yo puedo con el inglés”. La simple confianza de un niño puede ser contagiosa y llenar de esperanza a toda una familia. La escritura en esta pintura repite, “yo puedo” como un mantra que irradia desde la niña sin nombre y activa todo lo que la rodea en color, ritmo y luz. Las actitudes que encarnamos fluyen desde nosotros y atraviesan idiomas y fronteras. La positividad es poder.
