He is an adjunct professor of Spanish at the College of Charleston and has recently completed a Certificate in Documentary Arts at Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. He is a self-taught photographer and videographer. He especially enjoys capturing candid portraits of people he meets in the course of travels that have taken him to Scotland, Peru, Senegal, and Cuba. As a foreigner, he explores and documents the lives and backgrounds of other people who have ended up living in the United States.

Creative Interpretation

Alma’s story “El Combate” represents the collaborative soul of the Mexican peasants during harvest and the importance of their Catholic faith in every aspect of their daily life. La Virgen del Maíz is an approach to gather some iconic elements that shaped the Indochristian religiosity over centuries of cultural exchange. For this purpose, based on Alma’s story, I collected symbolic elements of the Mexican culture like a statue of La Virgen de Guadalupe, maize, Mexican chili pepper and a bead necklace. I created an installation with these elements, which later were photographed and printed on canvas. The frame is also an important part of the finished work, as most paintings of religious figures found in every Catholic Church have a golden frame. Some frames actually have a coat of real gold; the most iconic element of Mesoamerica’s indigenous culture and the most desired item for the conquistadors.
