Biography
Paola Torres-Ruiz was born in 1988 in La Estancia, Colima, México. She is a ceramicist and printmaker who lives in Conway, South Carolina. When she was five years old, she immigrated to the United States, and at the age of nineteen, she married her husband, who after three years of marriage successfully petitioned for her permanent residency. She is the mother of two children, a dedicated foster parent, and the director of the Southern Adventure Society, an organization that connects teens in foster care with the outdoors. Torres-Ruiz studied art at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. Her work is inspired by her family’s immigration journey and those of other Mexicans, as well as her experience of growing up in the South.
Creative Interpretation
While listening to Carmela’s story her words were incredibly vivid and had a cadence similar to the traditional Mexican game of La Lotería, which is a lot like the game Bingo in the United States. In this game, cards are called out in a random order. The order in which they are called matters greatly to the person trying to win the game. One missing card could keep you from your ultimate goal of success. Each rectangle represents a specific aspect of Carmela’s journey. Like many in her shoes, this journey of crossing the border is a lottery. One wrong turn could have kept her from her ultimate success. Although Carmela story was unique to her as every immigrant story is unique to its protagonist; there is a string of truth that binds us all together. That truth is that our ultimate goal is life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Biografía
Paola Torres-Ruiz nació en 1988 en La Estancia, Colima, México. Es ceramista y grabadora y actualmente reside en Conway, Carolina del Sur. A los cinco años llegó ilegalmente a los Estados Unidos de América. A los diecinueve años contrajo matrimonio con un ciudadano americano y después de tres años de casada pudo solicitar su residencia permanente en los Estados Unidos. Es madre de dos niños, está profundamente comprometida con el programa de familias de acogida (foster care) de su comunidad y es la directora de Southern Adventure Society, una organización que trabaja para conectar a adolescentes que viven con familias substitutas con actividades al aire libre. Torres-Ruiz estudió arte en South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. Su trabajo está inspirado en el viaje de migración de su familia y sus compatriotas como así también en su experiencia de crecer en la cultura del sur.
Interpretación creativa
Cuando escuché la historia de Carmela, sus palabras me resultaron increíblemente vívidas y sentí que tenían una cadencia similar a la lotería, un juego mexicano tradicional que se parece mucho al bingo de los Estados Unidos. En este juego, las cartas se nombran en orden aleatorio. Pero el orden en que cada carta aparece es muy importante para la persona que intenta ganar el juego. Una tarjeta que no sale podría mantener al jugador alejado de su objetivo de salir victorioso. En la obra, cada rectángulo representa un aspecto específico del viaje de Carmela. Para muchos que como ella han cruzado la frontera, este viaje es una lotería. Un giro equivocado podría haber cambiado su suerte. Aunque la historia de Carmela es personal y única, en la misma manera que cada historia de cada inmigrante es única para su protagonista, hay un lazo de verdad que nos une a todos. Esa verdad es que todos profundamente anhelamos la vida, la libertad y la búsqueda de la felicidad.
