Biography
Diana Farfán was born Bogotá, Colombia. An independent artist, instructor, cultural agent, and art mentor for Latino artists, Farfán received a BFA at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá and obtained an MFA in Ceramic Sculpture at the University of South Carolina. Her sculptures are a commentary on political and social issues overlaid by a fine layer of humor. In addition to serving as a member at large on the board of directors of Palmetto Luna Arts, an organization that promotes Latino artists and culture in South Carolina, she also serves in animal rescue and advocacy groups. Farfán currently lives and works in Greenville, South Carolina.
Creative Interpretation
I depicted Iris as an enlightened, victorious, armored warrior on a coyote. Iris showed courage, not only when facing the physical dangers of crossing the border, but also when confronting human traffickers, demanding more humane treatment for the other immigrants in the group. Her sensitivity, solidarity, intelligence and vision were the forces that helped them survive. Her sense of humor gave the adverse experience a cheerful end because a reason to laugh is always welcome in a moment of anguish and uncertainty. The round format is a reference to religious medals that are used as a symbol of faith and protection. Iris, following her faith and listening to her heart, entrusted her life and that of her friends to the hands of her God, and so she found courage to save them all. The fragmented map as halo reminds us of the uneven routes and winding directions through which life takes us in search of a bright future. The spirals evoke continuation, like the many other immigrants’ stories that are repeated every day when forced to cross any other borderline. The butterflies on the banner represent the right of every living being to move freely with dignity, equality and justice.

Biografía
Diana Farfán nació en Bogotá, Colombia. Se desempeña como artista, instructora, agente cultural y mentora de artistas latinos. Recibió su título de pre-grado en Bellas Artes en la Universidad Nacional de Colombia en Bogotá y obtuvo su Maestría en Bellas Artes en Escultura Cerámica en University of South Carolina, Columbia, Estados Unidos. Con su obra plástica plantea comentarios sobre temas políticos y sociales cubiertos con un toque de humor. Es miembro de la junta directiva de Palmetto Luna Arts, una organización que promueve el trabajo de los artistas y la cultura latina en Carolina del Sur, y también trabaja con otros grupos de defensa y rescate de animales. Actualmente Farfán vive y trabaja en Greenville, Carolina del Sur.
Interpretación creativa
Quise representar a Iris, como una guerrera iluminada, victoriosa, con armadura y sobre un coyote. Iris demostró coraje, no solo cuando enfrentaba los peligros físicos de cruzar la frontera, sino también cuando confrontó los traficantes de personas al exigirles un trato más humano para los otros inmigrantes de su grupo. La sensibilidad, solidaridad, inteligencia y visión de Iris fueron los atributos que los ayudaron a sobrevivir. Su sentido del humor le dio a la experiencia adversa, un final jocoso -ya que una razón para reír es precisamente lo que todos necesitamos en un momento de angustia e incertidumbre. El formato hace referencia a las medallas religiosas que, en su mayoría redondas, son utilizadas como símbolo de fe y protección. Iris, al seguir su fe y escuchar su corazón, confió su vida y la de sus amigos en las manos de su Dios, y así encontró valor para salvarlos a todos. El mapa fragmentado sobre su halo nos recuerda las rutas desiguales y las direcciones sinuosas a través de las cuales la vida nos lleva en busca de un futuro brillante. El espiral fragmentado evoca continuación; como la de muchas otras historias de inmigrantes que a diario se repiten al verse obligados a cruzar cualquier otra frontera. Las mariposas en el estandarte representan el derecho de todo ser vivo a moverse libremente con dignidad, igualdad y justicia.
